Here's a nice piece of open-source software that combines all different IMs into one interface (facebook and skype plugins can also be downloaded): http://pidgin.im/

Blog

Some of the posts I've put on here aren't too useful for others (e.g. the internet speed test.) In the future I'll be posting about different online topics with a couple-paragraph description.

XPS vs PDF

This was a useful site, it doesn't look like the predictions were too accurate though:

On Rabbits

There is no permanent rabbitiness, no essence of rabbit hanging in the sky, just populations of furry, long-eared, coprophagous, whisker-twitching individuals, showing a statistical distribution of variation in size, shape, colour, and proclivities.

A: Well, Dad, I could have finished years ago, but I wanted my thesis to rhyme.

Rockbox

Last Monday, my jacket was stolen at the bar, along with the cell phone (phone numbers!), keys, and ipod. The ipod was replaced yesterday with a 1st generation 4-gig nano from craigslist ($45). The reason I wanted one of the older ones is because they are among the latest players to be supported bv rockbox, an open-source firmware for music players (www.rockbox.org)

Apple is definitely the new Microsoft when it comes to proprietary software and compatibility. Since the original firmware doesn't support many file formats (and doesn't have video,) I wanted to give rockbox a try. The main formats I wanted were OGG and FLAC, since I have a good chunk of music stored that way. Rockbox is amazing! It totally opens up the hardware to its full potential and supports pretty much all basic file types (pictures, text, etc.)

Unfortunately, Rockbox isn't available on any of the newer MP3 players. I wouldn't even know where to start to try to give them a hand.

Current Books

Guns, Germs, and Steel (Diamond)
Very interesting stuff. Also won the Pulitzer Prize a few years ago.

Wikinomics (Tapscott, Williams)
This book is awesome! I also got the audiobook from the library.

China Inc. (Fishman)
This one's been on the back burner for a while, also very interesting. A lot of amazing things going on across the globe. Is there a similar book about the rising economy of India?
